‘Odd Softness’ Brushes Man’s Leg, Jumps Out Of The Water And Screams.

One man was swimming at a beautiful lake close to his house when he felt something strangely soft brush his leg out of nowhere. He jumped from the water as soon as he knew what it was, screaming for help from people close as horror sank in.

Angelo Mondragon felt something drift by his leg as, waist deep in the sea, he was swimming with friends and family. Though he never dreamed what it would turn out to be, the 32-year-old man remembered that what he felt was unusually soft.

“It felt like something you normally wouldn’t feel in the water,” Mondragon said, characterizing the moment something touched him from under the lake’s surface. Though it’s always unsettling to come into contact with something unexpected in a natural body of water, in this case, the life of a 4-year-old little girl was at risk.

Feeling something unusual against his skin, Mondragon kicked his leg to try to stir the water, hoping to see what touched him. He gasped as a small foot surfaced. Recalling his reflexive response, he said, “I did sort of a back kick to bring up whatever it was.” “Then I noticed the bottom of a baby’s foot float upward.”

Terrified, Mondragon reached for the foot, grabbing the leg attached to it and dragging a dead, blue body to the surface while he yelled for aid from those close. “I grabbed her and hauled her limp body to the shore,” Mondragon said. “The girl already had blue tones. She was not breathing. Later revealed as 4-year-old Sitlaly Hernandez, the child required resuscitation.

Two off-duty nurses were also at the lake that day, quite miraculously. She wasn’t out of the woods yet, but they ran to Hernandez’s side and performed CPR until emergency services arrived and carried the small daughter to a nearby hospital after responding to Mondragon’s cries for aid. Only time would tell what long-term damage had been done after being unconscious in the water and not breathing for a protracted length of time.

CBS said Sitlaly had hypothermia, her lungs were full of fluid, and doctors worried about the length of time her brain had been deprived of oxygen. About an hour away, she was finally driven to a children’s hospital, where she once again underwent a miracle. The 4-year-old was jumping about and playing with her brothers and sisters three days later. Thanks in great part to Mondragon’s efforts and the lake’s nurses that day, she finally recovered completely.

“If I were not in that right spot at the right time, it could have been a search and rescue mission,” Angelo Mondragon said as he considered the horrific experience USA Today reported. “That became my baby, as I told the mother of the little girl when I saw the baby’s toe.”

The father-of-three underlined those same feelings in another interview. “I saw just the bottom of her feet and then right then, that became my child; I reached in and I pulled her out like I would any of my babies,” he said.

Although Angelo Mondragon claims he was simply in the right place at the right moment, it is by God’s grace that he was the correct one to make the discovery as well. He was able to fly into action, saving the life child, child even as terror struck. Every second counted, and fortunately, Mondragon went into parent mode right away. Neither did his attempts at lifesaving that day.

The horrific event left Mondragon, a trade-oriented plumber, resolved to make sure another child never suffered like this. The infant was not sporting a life vest, he remarked. Knowing that, had she been wearing one, the whole scenario could have been different, he decided to gather life vests for local businesses and people without access to or means for the flotation devices.

Mondragon visited little Sitlaly in the hospital, then set out to stop other children from going through the atrocities she and her family endured. It is more evidence that angels among us the Lord places on a road to respond to prayers of others.

Two nurses and a plumber discovered the family of Sitlaly Hernandez needed a miracle here. God, thank you for these heroes. We can now help too by reminding others to be safe by telling this tale. When in or on the water, make sure your young children are always directly under supervision and sporting a life vest.
