Two Men Shoot Each Other’s Daughters in Crazy Road-Rage Incident.

Two men in Florida discovered the hard way that playing dumb games results in stupid prizes after the “stupid grown men” shot each other’s daughters. Although it has been labeled as a “crazy” road-rage incident, that may be oversimplifying what they did.

On a Saturday night, William Joseph Hale, 35, and Frank Gilliard Allison, 43, were both traveling northbound along Highway 1 just outside of Jacksonville, Florida, when all hell apparently erupted. While both men had their families in tow, they started what a witness described as a game of “cat and mouse,” each dangerously trying to gain one-upmanship over the other during a high-speed chase following an argument on the road while driving aggressively, Huffpost reported.

Police said that Frank Gilliard Allison, behind the wheel in a Nissan Murano, and William Joseph Hale, driving a black Dodge truck, started “speeding and driving recklessly” and occasionally “brake checking” each other, The Blaze reported. A witness said that things grew so strained that “he knew something bad was going to happen.” She was correct. Things rapidly turned from bad to worse as both men drove their vehicles in a way that put others and themselves at risk.

“They were both speeding and driving recklessly northbound in Jacksonville and then into Nassau County on U.S. 1, brake checking and trying to cut each other off,” Nassau County Sheriff Bill Leeper told Newsweek. “They obviously didn’t like the way the other one was driving so they were both acting like idiots.”

Witnesses reported that William Hale started to signal Frank Allison to stop at some point during the event. Driven by William Hale, Frank Allison’s wife Jessica reportedly rolled down the passenger window of their Nissan to present the truck with a middle finger. At that point, someone in Hale’s truck apparently grabbed the chance to toss a water bottle into the Nissan, aggravating the matter.

According to Nassau County Sheriff Bill Leeper, things then got considerably more violent as Frank Allison allegedly “grabbed his Sig Sauer 45-caliber automatic handgun and fired one shot at the other truck before driving away at a high rate of speed.” Tragically striking the man’s 5-year-old daughter in the leg, the bullet fired from Allison’s pistol entered Hale’s truck’s right rear passenger door, Yahoo! News reported.

Sadly, they did not stop there. Hale reportedly returned fire after learning his daughter had been shot, emptying “everything that was in the magazine” of his Glasky 9mm semi-automatic handgun. Police said Hale acknowledged he fired “seven or eight rounds” at the Nissan, at least three of which struck Allison’s car. One of those rounds unfortunately landed Allison’s 14-year-old daughter in the rear and resulted in a collapsed lung.

Having shot each other’s daughters, the two drivers apparently saw a police cruiser and chose to stop. Instead of allowing cooler heads to rule, though, the two started fighting one another. Before they were both finally arrested, a deputy split the pair. Both Hale and Allison were scheduled for the Nassau County Detention Facility and charged with second-degree felony attempted murder for their part in the road-rage episode that turned violent.

Fire and rescue teams hauled both girls to be treated for non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. Taken to UF Health Downtown with a collapsed lung, Allison’s 14-year-old daughter also said that at some point during the incident, both wives had conversations with 911 operators. Both men were freed on bonds totaling $150,000. Police doubt the men or their families knew one another before the event.

Law enforcement has predictably harshly condemned their shocking behavior, with police concluding in each of the arrest reports that their “act was imminently dangerous and demonstrated a depraved mind without regard for human life.” Sheriff Bill Leeper of Nassau County expressed similar sentiments.

“What’s scarier than one crazy driver with a gun? Two crazy drivers with a gun,” the shocked sheriff quipped, accoridng to NY Post. “Thankfully, no one was killed in this incident, but it could have very easily turned out that way because two people were acting stupid and let their tempers get the best of them,” he continued. “There could have been two dead kids because of two stupid grown men.”

The sheriff said he questioned “how stupid” two people could be “to endanger their children, not only by driving recklessly but by shooting a gun at another vehicle while engaged in a road rage incident, which is just insane.” He thought of the “movie dumb and dumber.” Correct is what the sheriff says. Still, this is selfish immaturity as well, not just stupidity.

Our first and most important responsibility as parents is to keep our kids safe. These two guys, and I use that term loosely, would seem to have put their pride above all else. They discovered the hard way that motivated by one’s own ego one hardly ever wins. Two defenseless girls paid the price sadly. I shudder to consider the damage this has done to their mental health, even if they will heal from their physical wounds. After all, dads should shield their daughters, not get them shot since they can’t control their anger on the road.
