(VIDEO) : Security Guard Says Man’s Shirt Is ‘Offending’ Shoppers

A confrontation involving a Mall of America security guard and a patron in a shirt displaying a “controversial” message was captured on video. According to the guard, the T-shirt was “offending” other shoppers and that’s when he gave the guy an ultimatum, demanding he follow his orders or else.

A cellphone video shows a confrontation between an unidentified man and a Mall of America security guard, apparently over the man’s clothing. Though many specifics are unknown, Alpha News, an independent organization consisting of a group of independent reporters covering often unreported news, claimed the confrontation occurred on a weekend at the famously large mall in Bloomington, Minnesota.

Referring to videos shared on social media, the newsgroup claimed that the security guard informed the man his T-shirt, “Jesus Saves,” was “offering” offense to other customers. Then, The Blaze said, he told the man to leave the mall or take off his shirt. Both news sources linked to a pair of video clips depicting the man in the “Jesus Saves” shirt chatting with security guards close to the rotunda of the mall. Alpha News claims one of the videos was live-streamed to Facebook.

The man’s shirt’s rear, as shown on the video footage, says, “Jesus is the only way” and features the well-known “coexist” emblem crossed out. According to the security guard who approached the man over his shirt, that seems to be an issue for the supposedly “offended” customers.

“Jesus is associated with religion, and it’s offending people,” an unnamed security guard tells the man in one clip, adding that “people have been offended.”

The security guard then hands the man instructions. He can leave the mall or take off his shirt, but he is not welcome to stay with his “Jesus Saves” message on show. Of course, the request perplexes the man and begs why the security guard is demanding such things.

“I didn’t say anything, though,” the man replies to the guard’s demands that he remove the shirt or leave. “I didn’t speak …. I didn’t say anything. I just went to Macy’s.”

Persistent in his insistence that the man comply, the security guard says the “offensive” shirt has no place in the mall, where it is allegedly “offering offense to others.” In one of the clips, the guard even starts to get enraged and angrily orders that man not to shop in his “Jesus Saves” shirt.

“Again,” the guard says, “I’m giving you a couple [of] options: take the shirt off, and you can go to Macy’s, and you can do your shopping — or you can leave the mall, OK? Those are your only options right now.” The guard also angrily demands, “If you want to shop here, you need to take that shirt off!”

The guard responds with his voice raised, claiming that “it is religious soliciting,” which isn’t permitted, as the man questions what’s wrong with the message on the shirt.

“It is religious soliciting; there is no soliciting allowed on mall property, which is private property!” the guard alleges, adding, “We’ve had guests come up saying that they’ve been offended by your shirt … take the shirt off, and you can go shopping!”

The man in the “Jesus saves” shirt gives a fist bump to a different guard before the man in the shirt and the guards part ways, thus ending one of the clips. It is unclear if the man left the mall or not. Alpha News claims that some internet comments claimed the man was allegedly allowed to stay in the mall wearing his shirt on, but Mall of America would not provide the outlet with any background or justification in reference to the incident.

Mall of America, which has hosted and supported a drag show for “all ages” in its “iconic rotunda,” forbids “inappropriate attire, including apparel that “has obscene language, obscene gestures, or racial/religious/ethnic slurs that are likely to create a disturbance,” adding that the mall also forbids “picketing, demonstrating, soliciting, protesting, or petitioning.” Does this shirt specifically meet the requirements? You chose.
